Earlier this year I became obsessed with sourdough bread, to the point where I was baking six or seven loaves day. I love the entire process, the meticulous culturation of the starter, the mixing and rising of the dough and the baking of the bread. Every time I take a loaf out of the oven it is like magic! I giggle. Sourdough bread making works well for me because physically it is forgiving, there are long rest breaks built into the process. I have lupus and this ebb and flow of activity meshes with my lifestyle. It gives me something to do, keeps me busy, but not too busy.
The problem is what do you do with the accumulation of six or seven loaves of bread a day? You can only give so many loaves to friends and family before they start ducking you (sorta like garden produce in the summer). So I decided to start selling it. Every two to three weeks I have a little Pop-Up Bakery in my driveway. I advertise amongst my friends on Facebook and on the neighborhood group. Then I had the idea that if I added a page to my existing website for embroidery designs (that is another post) people could pre-order loaves. This is still a very small endeavor, I won’t be shipping or delivering. But if you know what you want we can make arrangement for pickups, here at my house or at my bi-weekly (or more usually tri-weekly) Pop-Up shop.
I freeze the bread the day it is baked, wrap it in two sheets of aluminum foil, and seal it in a freezer bag. This allows the bread to keep in the freezer for up to three months. To thaw just unwrap and place in your oven (this controls the temperature while thawing, don’t turn on the oven and make sure the light is off) overnight and it will be ready the next day.
I can also, on a limited basis, offer fresh out of the oven bread. It will depend on what I am baking each day, so it will not be available through the website, only for special orders. There will also be a selection of jams, jellies, desserts and other baked goods available from time to time.
